Ryan's View On Girls And Dogs

During episode 12 of The Real World Brooklyn, Devyn Simone was shown buying her little Yorkie pup, Brooklyn. It was an adorable little bundle of love that most of the roommates appreciated when she brought it back to the house. However, one person who wasn't too happy about it when he found out that little Brooklyn was joining the cast was Ryan Conklin.

His displeasure seemed to be immediately triggered when Sarah Rice gave Ryan the news of the addition and referred to Brooklyn as Devyn's new accessory. Ryan didn't like the concept of a dog being considered a girl's accessory. To him a dog should be treated like a faithful companion, but still, a dog. He felt that it should be a pet and not an extension of one's wardrobe or a dress-up doll. So, it didn't make Ryan feel any better when Sarah told him that Devyn had also bought four doggie sweaters for it.

In Confessional, Ryan commented, "All these people who think they're so glamorous - they think they're so glam carrying around little dogs as if it were a bag. Seriously, these stupid, like idiot girls in this world, who are hooked on shopping and 0rgasm when they see a nice bag, get a dog. Um, it's still not glamorous, it's still stupid, it's always been stupid, when girls carry around little tiny dogs in their bags, especially ones they buy little sweaters for. Paris Hilton used to do it."

And with the mention of Paris Hilton, we see that Ryan's consternation is not really about little dogs going for rides in mommy's handbag, but rather Ryan's feelings about society girls.

Speaking of Paris, Ryan said sarcastically, "That's a great role model." Then regarding girls who want to be like her, "I can't stand stuck-up wenches that walk around, all souped-up, glamorous. If they go to the bathroom they have to dress up like they're going to the prom. Walking around in their $500 freaking, $5000 stupid bag."

The notion of it all caused Ryan to go check with Devyn and ask her in disbelief if she had really gotten sweaters for the dog. He kept his feelings in check but stated plainly to Devyn that he did not believe dogs should be treated like accessories. He said they used to be, like six years before, when Paris Hilton did it.

So again we come back to Paris. Looking back six years, it can been seen that that was the time that Paris and Nicole Ritchie were in their first season of The Simple Life. The conclusion must be that that show had a pronounced impact on shaping Ryan's tastes in women, causing him to have a strong disgust for high society girls. Perhaps he felt a commiserating connection between himself, from little Gettysburg, and the young men of Altus, Arkansas, whose affections were toyed with by the girls from the big city. Perhaps he had had his own experience being toyed with by some Pennsylvania painted woman that had wrapped him around her fingers with the deluxe Lee press-on nails and then left him behind.

In any case, it is clear that for a girl to have a chance with Ryan, she needs to be down-to-earth, and from someplace real, like say for example, Salt Lake City.
