Ryan And JD Ordonez

Ryan ConklinFrom the beginning of The Real World Brooklyn, Ryan Conklin was interested in getting to know JD Ordonez. As Ryan has stated, no gay people in Gettysburg or the Army were ever out to Ryan, so JD was the first opportunity for him to learn first hand about issues that affect gay men and about their life experiences. Unfortunately, JD was often away from the house hanging out with his non-cast member friends, lessening the opportunity to interact. This bothered Ryan, because he felt that JD was separating himself from everyone else and losing the benefit of the experience that comes from having a diverse group of people living and socializing together.

It also bothered Ryan that JD wanted the cast to be part of things that he was involved with but JD didn't show interest in things that the other cast members were interested in or involved with. Ryan felt that this adversely impacted JD being friends with Ryan and the others, at least during the first few weeks.

Hopefully despite this, JD was able at some point to help the already right minded Ryan learn a few things about not sustaining stereotypes and about what comments may have seemed okay are not in fact okay.

One mild case of saying something not right was when Ryan called JD's laugh "the gayest laugh." One shouldn't say things that encourage stereotypes. It should be noted that Chet Cannon went to the extreme, making a very sick comment that JD should "try to, I don't know, making it through life without being killed having that laugh." What kind of person thinks of such things?

Ryan himself did something very bad when he once mocked JDs mannerisms and way of speaking, by doing a repulsive swishy lisp impersonation. Ryan's routine was not acceptable. Period. End of story. However, giving Ryan the benefit of the doubt, this should be something that Ryan just needs to be educated about.
