There appeared to be several reasons why Ryan Conklin had Chet Cannon as his best friend in the Real World Brooklyn house. One is that Ryan appreciated loyalty and Chet was largely loyal to him. Also, Ryan found some overlap in their sense of humor, which was important to someone like Ryan who likes to laugh and say funny things a lot. Third, Ryan probably had a charitable spot in his heart for the strange virgin with the big unnecessary glasses who was always making an ass of himself. However there were several times when Chet's general obnoxiousness was too much for Ryan to handle. Ryan kept his cool, but let Chet know that Chet's defective personality was frustrating him. Then Ryan would usually push it out of his mind and forget about it so as not to affect the friendship. One example of this was one night when Ryan, Chet, and Scott Herman went to Angels & Kings. Ryan had the good fortune of meeting a lady who indicated that she could connect Ryan with friends for a job opportunity. As Ryan tells it, Chet first tugged at Ryan and asked who was the woman. When Ryan said she was a model, Chet physically came between her and Ryan and monopolized the conversation and prevented Ryan from finishing the discussion about the job. Ryan confronted Chet about it outside the bar, but Chet basically called Ryan a liar and denied that he had interrupted anything. Chet continued to twist things as usual and tried to make himself seem like the victim. Ryan literally shook it off and said he was done. Chet insufferably spat out "good", and kept lumbering away.
Another time, Ryan was doing laundry and he found out from Baya Voce that some of the roommates had bet that he and Baya would kiss. Ryan was always concerned about making sure that there was never anything during his time on the show that could even give an impression that he wasn't totally true to his then girlfriend, Belle. So, Ryan was bothered by the notion that people would talk about a possibility of him kissing another girl. Then Ryan found out that his friend Chet had been a part of it and Ryan was even more bothered by it. Ryan confronted Chet, who like a perirectal abscess remained steadfastly unpleasant as Ryan tried to get him to come clean.
This time Chet realized he shouldn't tick off his only friend in the house, so he went after Ryan, who again literally shook it off and forgave his disagreeable pal.
