With only one phone at The Real World Brooklyn house, calls were often interrupted with the tone indicating a call waiting. With a phone that has a switch hook, one would depress it for a short duration and then when it was released the second call would be on the line. Ryan Conklin understood flashing the switch hook but had trouble figuring out how long to keep it depressed. He kept trying to do it but always kept only the original caller.
One day while speaking with his girlfriend at the time, Belle, Ryan heard the call waiting tone and tried to pick up the second call, to no avail. He called out for assistance to anyone in the house who was in ear shot. He wondered if pressing the hook after the tone was correct "or do you have to do it instantaneously?" Not hearing a reply, he implored, "Bueller?"
Hearing another opportunity on the phone, Ryan experimented with holding the hook down longer and finally achieved success.
The person on the second call, Alison, wished to speak with Devyn Simone. Ryan told her that she was not at home, but was instead at a gay bar. Alison asked who she was speaking to and Ryan told her his name. Alison wondered if he was the roommate featured in Men's Health magazine. Ryan immediately fibbed that he was, saying "I look almost similar to the Incredible Hulk. I'm like an albino Incredible Hulk."
Alison said that Devyn had requested that she let Devyn know what people were saying on the internet about the Brooklyn cast. She said that all the cast was being talked about except for Devyn and Ryan Conklin.
They speak for awhile and eventually Alison says goodbye. Ryan returns to Belle and finds that she has already hung up. Not realizing that the long passage of time had caused her to end the call, he believed his technology problem with the phone was the cause and he became exasperated.
When a soldier is on a mission communicating with his superior, it probably doesn't occur too often to have a message on another frequency from someone wanting to talk about the latest internet gossip, so Ryan Conklin being flummoxed is understandable.
